Single paling timber fencing
The traditional Australian boundary fence: treated pine palings butted side by side on three rails. Straightforward, economical and easy to paint or stain.
A single paling fence uses 150 mm treated pine palings fixed side by side to three horizontal rails – about five palings per metre. Small gaps open up as the timber dries, so it is a little less private than a lapped fence, but it is the most economical timber fence we build and the easiest to repair.
We build it on galvanised 65 × 65 mm steel posts set in concrete (timber 150 × 50 mm posts are available), with Z-brackets, tek screws and black plastic caps. Heights are 1.5 m, 1.8 m, 2.1 m and 2.4 m; fences over 1.8 m normally need council approval.

Common questions
How many palings in a metre?
Around 5 per metre – 150 mm palings with a 50 mm gap. A lapped fence adds a 100 mm paling over each gap.
Will the palings shrink?
Yes, slightly, as the treated pine dries. Small gaps are normal on a single paling fence; choose lapped if you want none.
Do you remove the old fence?
Yes – demolition and removal are part of a replacement quote.
